Siemens Announces Major Workforce Development Initiative in Ohio

EP Editorial Staff | February 18, 2014

Siemens reports that it will partner with Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (OH) to prepare the types of highly skilled workers necessary for a manufacturing resurgence in America. The formal announcement is to be made at an event hosted by The Atlantic on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Siemens’ Norwood facility near Cincinnati.

Built in 1898, the Norwood operation is one of the oldest Siemens manufacturing sites in the world. Employing 500 people, it now serves as a  “Global Motor” research and technology center where electric motors are designed, built and shipped worldwide for use by chemical, pulp & paper, power generation, cement, water/wastewater, metals, mining, oil & gas and transportation industries. Siemens has invested more than $40 million in the plant in recent years.

The new Siemens/Cincinnati State workforce-development partnership would appear to be a natural. The institution offers more than 100 associate degree and certificate programs in business technologies, health and public safety, engineering technologies, humanities and sciences and information technologies. Cincinnati State also has one of the most comprehensive co-op programs among two-year colleges in the U.S.

Update to follow on Wednesday.
