Is Your Site Susceptible to Cyber Threats?

A better title for this article might have been “How Prepared Are Your Operations for Cyber Attacks That Are Bound to Come?”
It wouldn’t be surprising if you were to answer, “not as much as we should be.” You’re not alone in that regard.
A case in point is a recent survey involving nearly 100 executives of critical-infrastructure organizations, conducted by cybersecurity leader Indegy, New York (indegy.com). While responding organizations may have made significant investments to secure their IT infrastructures, they don’t seem to have fully addressed threats to operational technology (OT) environments.
Indegy’s research underscores lack of preparedness in several key sectors, including energy, utilities, and manufacturing. Among the findings:
• 35% of respondents said they have little visibility into the current state of security within their environment, while 23% reported they have no visibility.
• 63% claimed that insider threats and misconfigurations are the biggest security risks they currently face.
• 57% said they are not confident that their organization and other infrastructure companies are in control of OT security.
Meanwhile, according to the survey, 44% of respondents cited plans to increase industrial-control-system (ICS) spending in the next 12 to 24 months, with 29% reporting they were not sure.
