Excellent leadership is the very essential success factor for lasting results of any improvement initiative an organization undertakes, including improvements of Reliability and Maintenance performance.

As a leader you need to create an organization of disciples that will follow you to make your vision or future organization a reality. It is very important to develop and communicate your beliefs to your organization. These beliefs will guide your organization on its journey towards your goals.

As maintenance and reliability consultants, IDCON developed our core beliefs to guide us when we are developing reliability and maintenance work processes strategies for our clients.   Christer Idhammar, our founder, developed these beliefs using common sense and applied them to our Results Oriented Reliability and Maintenance Philosophy.

What the Future Holds

We see the trend of advanced technology continuing to change how maintenance teams do their tasks. However, while technology is a great tool, it cannot replace the improvement value of following the best practices maintenance work processes:

  • Preventive Maintenance & Essential Care and Monitoring
  • Planning and Scheduling
  • Materials and Spare Parts Management
  • Root Cause Problem Elimination

One area of concern is the number of vital maintenance and operations professionals retiring in the next five years. It is important that organizations communicate with these veterans to gather their knowledge and have clear work management processes in place before they exit. When you bring on new team members, leadership must communicate the vision, expectations, and the processes. It is well known that people cannot use advanced precision skills in a reactive environment, therefore it is critical for work processes to be ingrained in the organization.

One of our core beliefs is that the right people are an organization’s most vital asset.

Every organization has room for improvement in their work management processes. In many organizations the waste in operations and maintenance systems is huge. IDCON’s definition of waste is the difference between how things could be and how they are; waste is typically 20% to 60%.

An objective assessment identifies the opportunities to reduce/eliminate the waste.   IDCON’s assessment uses 200+ objective questions that evaluate nine key areas from leadership and organization to tools. Once the assessment is complete, your organization is given detailed findings and recommendations for getting quick wins and long-term results.

Some benefits of implementing best practices in reliability and maintenance include overall production quality, energy savings, and reduction of overall maintenance costs.

Education in best practices of maintenance management makes a significant difference in how your organization approaches your improvement goals. We’ve seen many organizations create improvement initiatives that “die on the vine” because they do not create the environment for change through communication and the right kind of education. Our approach uses a combination of customized formal training to create the awareness of best practices and on-the-job coaching that focuses on “Why, What, and How” and builds the buy-in across the organization.

Long-term Customer Success

An organization cannot have long-term success without a partnership between Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Stores. All are stakeholders in the organization and it is essential each group buys-in to any improvement initiative in reliability and maintenance.
